چکیده

The Treatment Effect, the Cross Difference, and the Interaction Term in Nonlinear “Difference-in-Differences” Models I demonstrate that Ai and Norton’s (2003) point about cross differences is not relevant for the estimation of the treatment effect in nonlinear “difference-in-differences” models such as probit, logit or tobit, because the cross difference is not equal to the treatment effect, which is the parameter of interest. In a nonlinear “difference-in-differences” model, the treatment effect is the cross difference of the conditional expectation of the observed outcome minus the cross difference of the conditional expectation of the potential outcome without treatment. Unlike in the linear model, the latter cross difference is not zero in the nonlinear model. It follows that the sign of the treatment effect in a nonlinear “difference-in-differences” model with a strictly monotonic transformation function is equal to the sign of the coefficient of the interaction term of the time and treatment group indicators. The treatment effect is simply the incremental effect of the coefficient of the interaction term. JEL Classification: C21, C25, H0, I0, J0

Incomplete Draft Do Not Cite Interaction Terms in Nonlinear Models

Although applied economists often estimate interaction terms to infer how the effect of one independent variable on the dependent variable depends on the magnitude of another independent variable, most researchers misinterpret the coefficient in nonlinear models. The magnitude of the interaction effect does not equal the coefficient on the interaction term, can be of opposite sign, and is cond...

Nonlinear Analysis of Interaction with SVC in Stressed Power Systems: Effect of SVC Controller Parameters

In this paper, the effect of Static VAr Compensator (SVC) parameters on the nonlinear interaction of steam power plant turbine-generator set is studied using the Modal Series (MS) method. A second order representation of a power system equipped with SVC is developed and then by MS method the nonlinear interaction of torsional modes is assessed under various conditions and the most influencing f...

Effect of Abutment Height Difference on Stress Distribution in Mandibular Overdentures: A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis

Background and Aim: Implant-supported overdentures are a treatment option for edentulous patients. One of the important factors in determining the prognosis of overdenture treatment is to control the distribution of stress in the implant-bone and attachment complex. This study assessed the effect of implant abutment height difference on stress distribution in mandibular overdentures. Materials...

Effect of thermoelastic damping in nonlinear beam model of MEMS resonators by differential quadrature method

This paper presents a nonlinear model of a clamped-clamped microbeam actuated by an electrostatic load with stretching and thermoelastic effects. The frequency of free vibration is calculated by discretization based on the Differential Quadrature (DQ) Method. The frequency is a complex value due to the thermoelastic effect that dissipates energy. By separating the real and imaginary parts of fr...

Strain Hardening Analysis for M-P Interaction in Metallic Beam of T-Section

This paper derives kinematic admissible bending moment – axial force (M-P) interaction relations for mild steel by considering strain hardening idealisations. Two models for strain hardening – Linear and parabolic have been considered, the parabolic model being closer to the experiments. The interaction relations can predict strains, which is not possible in a rigid, perfectly plastic idealizat...
